We live in the midst of some of Missouri’s beautiful wine
country, with stunning views from a variety of wineries that offer live
entertainment and a chance to sample their wares just down Hwy 94 in St.
Charles County. But did you know that
the St. Louis area is also home to a very active craft brewery scene? As a matter of fact, livability.com just
named the city number 7 of Top 10 Beer Cities.
It started 23 years ago when Saint Louis Brewery, makers of
Schlafly Brand Beers, decided to start making beer in the city dominated by the
King of Beers. While they have grown to
be the state’s largest locally owned independent brewery, many others have
joined them in the craft beer movement in and around St. Louis. It’s been a
slow turn away from the huge industrial brewers toward the micro-breweries, but
the last few years have seen an explosion of craft brewers.
There are over two dozen breweries at this point, with many
more on the way. That makes beer trips
as popular as winery trips have been in the past. Each location brings its own unique atmosphere
and offerings, and food available from light fare to full scale restaurants.
Pick a pint of the brewmaster’s take on a familiar style or
choose from the specialty or seasonal beers they have on hand. Don’t know what
you want? Buy a flight (a variety of beers in sample sizes) and you’re likely
to find a new favorite. You can also find out what’s pouring at many of the craft
breweries before you go with the OnTapSTL (www.ontapstl.com)
app available for your iPhone.
Get a group together and see what makes us one of the top
beer cities in America. Here are just a few of our popular craft brewers:
Hope to see you out and about drinking local soon.
